Type of Lumber to Use

There are many choices, but the most common are cedar and whitewoods.

Fence Height

6 or 8 feet are the most common and typically allowed by most cities and HOA’s. You should check with your HOA for specific guidelines. Shorter fences can also be built which are generally used for hiding electrical boxes, pool equipment or to separate a yard for dogs.

Fence Configuration

Common fence configuration options include:

  • 3 1/2, 4, 5 1/2 and 6 inch picket width
  • Side by side
  • Board on Board
  • Shadow box
  • Old fashioned piket style

Post Type

Common posts to use include steel, wood and landscape timbers. Many cities and HOA’s require that fences be built with steel posts.

Fence Staining

Stained fences will look better and last longer than an un-stained fence. There are various fence stain colors to choose from.

Customizations

The most common customizations are gates.
